First you’ll need to download the MetaMask plugin on Chrome. Brave users have had issues in the past, so I would recommend sticking with the Chrome browser. Also, most DeFi protocols ubiquitously support MetaMask.
After you’ve downloaded the plugin, you’ll need to manually add the Avalanche network. Click on the networks tab and select custom RPC.
Add the following parameters into their respective fields on MetaMask.
Network Name: Avalanche Network
New RPC URL: https://api.avax.network/ext/bc/C/rpc
ChainID: 0xa86a
Symbol: AVAX
Explorer: https://cchain.explorer.avax.network
This completes your MetaMask set up. Now you’re ready to receive your assets from the Avalanche network.
Before you can send your assets over to your MetaMask wallet, you’ll need to convert them from the X chain to the contract C Chain. To make this conversion an Avalanche wallet is needed.
Creating a wallet is very easy, fist navigate to the wallet web page.
Select create new wallet and generate a key phrase. Make sure you write this phrase down and keep it in a secure place. Also, save it in a portable drive so you have a back up copy. Don’t not lose this phrase, because you’ll need it for subsequent logins.
After creating your wallet, you’ll have to deposit some AVAX tokens. These tokens are required to pay for transactions. I usually buy mine from Binance and Hotbit. After loading your wallet with AVAX, proceed to send your tokens to the C Chain.
Click on the CrossChain tab and send the desired amount of AVAX tokens. Never send all your tokens and always use a small amount for test transactions.
For the last step, click on the Send tab. Select the C Chain and enter in the desired amount of tokens you want to send over to your MetaMask account. Copy and paste your MetaMask address into the address field. The transaction will only take a few second to complete.
You’ll see the Ethereum logo at the top but your balance will reflect the amount of AVAX tokens you hold. Now you’re ready to interact with DeFi protocols on the Avalanche chain.
Even if you’re not planning to immediately seek yield on Avalanche, it’s a good idea to get prepared in advance. Especially if you’re not technically savvy. Create a wallet and become comfortable interacting with Avalanche based protocols. This way you can move quickly to pounce on future opportunities.
